GENERAL MANAGER

As a pivotal member of NATSILS, you will provide visionary, culturally informed leadership to the Chairperson, Deputy Chairperson, staff, and members, guiding excellence in governance, strategy, and operations. You will champion social justice for mob, driving initiatives that strengthen national legal advocacy and create meaningful, lasting community impact.

Each day, you will: 

  • Drive NATSILS’ strategic vision, providing leadership and expert advice on justice system reform 
  • Lead and manage staff, operations, governance, finances, and risk to deliver high-quality outcomes 
  • Negotiate, implement, and report on funding and partnership contracts, ensuring compliance with obligations 
  • Oversee policy, law reform, and advocacy initiatives to advance justice and equality for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities 
  • Lead coordination of national member networks, including the NATSILS Policy Officer Network, national meetings, and collaboration forums. 
  • Foster strong partnerships and collaboration with ATSILS members, communities, government, and stakeholders 
  • Represent NATSILS nationally and internationally, providing high-quality advice, reports, and advocacy 
  • Promote cultural safety, sector development, and compliance with ALS and NATSILS policies, values, and governance. 
  • Work in partnership with the Coalition of Peaks and Government through the Justice Policy Partnership under the National Agreement on Closing the Gap.

Manager – National Justice Policy Partnership

Full-Time | Fixed-Term, 2 Years | Sydney, NSW

As a senior leader of NATSILS, you will drive the delivery of high-quality policy, advocacy, and secretariat support, shaping national justice initiatives and advancing Closing the Gap priorities. You will lead and mentor a high-performing team while fostering strategic partnerships with government, ACCOs, and peak bodies. You will work closely with the Commonwealth Attorney-General’s Department as the JPP Co-Chair to progress joint planning, reporting, and JPP priorities.

Each day, you will:

  • Lead and mentor the National Justice Policy Partnership (JPP) team to deliver expert policy advice, submissions, reports, and briefings.
  • Oversee preparation and delivery of policy reports, briefings, speaking notes, and discussion papers.
  • Advise NATSILS leadership on the JPP Strategic Framework, Implementation Roadmap, and priority initiatives.
  • Foster two-way communication between NATSILS and ATSILS to support the JPP strategic framework.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with government, justice agencies, ACCOs, and peak bodies.
  • Manage team performance, resourcing, and compliance with ALS/NATSILS policies, values, and WHS standards.

Director – Legal & Sector Policy

Full-Time | Fixed-Term, 2 Years | Sydney, NSW

As a senior leader at NATSILS, you will shape national legal and sector policy, driving strategic advocacy and systemic reform to strengthen Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Services and reduce justice system contact for children and adults. You will oversee criminal, family, and civil legal policy, ensuring alignment with Closing the Gap justice reforms. You will work closely with ATSILS across all jurisdictions to ensure national policy positions reflect legal practice evidence, community priorities, and lived experience.

Each day, you will:

  • Provide strategic leadership of NATSILS Legal and Sector Policy practice, guiding high-impact advocacy, systemic reform, and sector sustainability.
  • Lead development of national policy advice, submissions, and reform strategies across criminal, family, and civil law, including input to the Justice Policy Partnership.
  • Manage and mentor Policy Officers, overseeing performance, workloads, and delivery of evidence-based policy outputs.
  • Collaborate with NATSILS, ATSILS, and stakeholders to ensure policy positions reflect lived experience, community needs, and legal practice expertise.
  • Represent NATSILS in national forums, working groups, and engagements with government, legal sector, and community stakeholders.
  • Monitor legislation, funding, and sector trends, supporting systemic reform and effective coordination across the legal assistance sector.

Project Officer – National Justice Policy Partnership

Full-Time | Fixed-Term, 2 Years | Sydney, NSW

As a pivotal member of NATSILS, you will help shape and drive national justice policy by supporting the development and delivery of evidence-based policy, advocacy, and secretariat functions. You will contribute to research, draft submissions, and engage with key stakeholders to advance justice priorities under the National Agreement on Closing the Gap. You will also support joint planning, reporting and policy development work with the Commonwealth Attorney-General’s Department, as the Co-Chair of the JPP.
 
Each day, you will:

  • Prepare submissions, reports, briefings, and research papers to support JPP priorities.
  • Conduct research and policy analysis to inform advocacy and policy positions.
  • Coordinate consultations to ensure First Nations perspectives are central to JPP work.
  • Support stakeholder engagement, including meetings, workshops, and forums.
  • Assist with monitoring, evaluation, and reporting of JPP initiatives, including work related to the JPP Strategic Framework and Implementation Roadmap.
  • Uphold NATSILS and ALS values, EEO, and WHS policies in all work.
